Google announced yesterday their latest development in mobile technology and commerce, Google Wallet. Whilst the name might not be the best, the system is what many commentators believe to be the future of mobile communications and mobile device usage. Using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology Google Wallet will allow you to pay for items in a store with your mobile handset simply by tapping it on the reader at checkout. The system will also evolve to allow you to auto redeem vouchers and coupons (obviously integrating with Google offers) to make the discounted purchase a seemless process.
To begin with the system is going to be available on the Google Nexus S 4G however over time it will be available on all Google handsets. You can find out more at the Google blog or at the newly created Google Wallet Microsite.
This sort of technology is undoubtedly the future of mobile usage and through this deal with Mastercard and Citi Google will hope to steal a march on its major competitors, specifically Apple. If they can prove it works well, and get the store level penetration to make it a viable payment option, it could be a big step in catching up with Apple in the smart phone market.
OK so this is a little bit late but I was looking around the YouTube reviews and came across this one for the Sony Xperia Play produced by engadget which I thought may be pretty useful. Some have dismissed the Xperia Play as a gimmic and something which will not make any headway in the smart phone world of today. When you consider the youth market however and how many young people have Nintendo ds but their main console is the Sony PS3, how many would jump ship to Sony if it meant they could take their PS3 experience portable and make it their mobile phone at the same time?
